How Does Semaglutide Work?

Semaglutide is a medication that is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of obesity. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means that it acts like a hormone produced in the intestine that regulates insulin secretion and appetite.

Semaglutide works by decreasing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness, which can lead to a reduction in calorie intake and weight loss. It is taken once a week as an injection under the skin. The starting dose is 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 2-4 weeks, and the dose is then increased as you progress through the program.

A "Game Changer" in the struggle to lose weight, Semnaglutide helps by

  • Delays stomach emptying, leading to a feeling of fullness and smaller meal size

  • Slows intestinal motility

  • Lowers blood sugars, in part by reducing the production of sugar in the liver

  • Stimulates insulin secretion by the Pancreas

SEMAGLUTIDE Dosage

At CRAVE Medical Spa & Wellness Center, we start a low dose which can be increased gradually over 16 to 20 weeks to a max of 2.4 mg weekly. Not all patients will need the max of 2.4 mg weekly though; it is common for patients to have great success with minimal side effects around 0.25 - 1 mg weekly.

Important Information About
Semaglutide

In a large clinical trial called the STEP program, which included over 4,500 participants with overweight or obesity, Semaglutide was shown to significantly reduce body weight compared to placebo. Semaglutide has shown promising results for weight loss in clinical trials. Participants who received Semaglutide at a dose of 2.4 mg per week lost an average of 15% of their body weight, while those who received placebo lost an average of 2.4% of their body weight.

Weight loss isn’t the only benefit,  Semaglutide has also been shown to improve various health outcomes, such as improving cholesteroal, reducing blood pressure, and improving glycemic control.

Semaglutide should be used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise for optimal results. Semaglutide is also not suitable for everyone and may not be appropriate for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, low blood sugar, decreased kidney function, pancreatitis, medullary thyroid cancer (or a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma), or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.

As with any medication, there can be potential side effects of Semaglutide, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, temperature sensitivity and irritability.  The CRAVE Medical Spa team has compiled a list of Tips and Tricks that can be used to help alleviate some potential side effects.

Since the Semaglutide injection does not help increase energy or boost metabolism, we recommend pairing it with either a Vitamin B12 injection or one of our lipotropic injections.
